PC-BSD 1.5 RC2 released

PC-BSD 1.5 RC2 has been released. Here’s a quick-list of some of the new features:

  • Xorg 7.3
  • KDE 3.5.8
  • FreeBSD 6.3 Release
  • NEW System Updater tool – Keeps system & PBIs up to date – Allows override variables, so that admins can use their own mirrors / servers to roll out updates to users.
  • Improvements to WiFi tool, BSSID support and better SSID support
  • Improvements to the PBI Removal tool – Remove a list of PBIs at a time
  • NEW sound detection program! Uses XML backend to identify and load modules
  • NEW amd64 build of 1.5, including PBI that are on our auto-build server
  • NEW PBI icon preview library, now a PBI file shows the icon embedded in it on your desktop, not the generic “PBI” format icon

I’ve been beta testing this (and previous versions) and must say this version is really stable and very fast (I know, I’m prejudiced ;-)

RC2 can be downloaded from the PC-BSD ftp site. If you’re interested, give it a try and let us know what you think and if you come across any glitches and bugs (our testing mailing list is testing [at] lists [dot] pcbsd [dot] org)

Oh, we’re also still looking for translators for the 1.5 version. If you’re willing and able to help, drop me a line: [gerard [at] pcbsd [dot] org

UPDATE (08/03/2008): 1.5 RC3 is now available.

    I will

honestly say, that basing PC-BSD on version 6.3 without a custom compiled kernel, is a massive mistake. You/They should migrate to 7.0 with a ULE scheduler

for the base of the next release instead of being behind the curve.
Basing it on 7.0 would urge every user aiming for a desktop BSD to go for PC-BSD over

DesktopBSD without one doubt in my mind from the very nature of desktop fans, I’m one of them ;)
I really hope it is just a quick maintenance release

syncing with 7-STABLE though and come out with a 7.0 based version ASAP yesterday!
It is more than a humble request but I believe crucial in a major

up-taking and strategy in the desktop BSD niche!! This is also just my opinion and thoughts.

I have tried RC2 and its new tool is nice, but i will not

give 7.0 up now after release from its major advantage in almost every way, sorry derivatives.

were already working on 1.5 (based on 6.3) when FBSD 7.0 was released and just want to release this first. We will be releasing 1.6 ASAP based on 7.0 ;-)

  3. Eric says

really great news!! Does PC-BSD not deserve having a 2.0 for the migration? or will you migrate for 1.6, stabilize, then bump to 2.0 for the stabilized 7.0

    migration? :P

Seems like a great outcome, I cant wait to try! Yes I’m playing with RC3 now as well ;)
