For starting I would recommend TrueOS, you can check a FreeBSD base quick and with good defaults. Then if you want to explore other BSD’s I really like OpenBSD defaults and ideology, and NetBSD organization and scope :) – u/VampyrBit

I have used FreeBSD for about a year. The best parts were that the documentation was available offline and useful, and the system was truly integrated. The only other software system I have that experience in is Emacs. In many Linux-based distros it’s hard to find an authoritative source of information for all the base system, and the whole fragmentation of the distro ecosystem can create lots of confusion. – u/o_bem-te-vi_belicoso
